In a bid to protect children, Council passed the Child Protection ordinance. The goal of the ordinance is to create and nurture a culture of respect for child survival, development, care, and protection and participation rights of children in Mbarara District.

Specifically, the ordinance provides for child protection; prohibiting child labour, exploitation that is detrimental to the child’s physical, mental and psychological development; and activities harmful to child health and development.
